This is what happened when I tried celery juice

I had never heard it could do this.

When I set out to try celery juice, I hadn't actually researched it much. I had heard the buzz about juicing in general, but I know that most juices give a massive sugar dump into your gut, so I wasn't particularly interested in jumping on that bandwagon.

Of course, many people throw some fruit into the juice mix to make it more palatable, which is where most of the sugar comes from. I thought, why not just eat the fruits and vegetables instead of grinding them up and squeezing them out? So, I sat out the juicing trend for quite awhile.


Then one day, I was picking up and puttering around the house with the TV on in the background. It was showing a sort of documentary on the topic of holistic health and wellness, and I happened to tune in just as a guy was talking about celery juice. He went on and on about all of the wonderful things it does for your health, so I thought, why not give it a try? I like celery. It doesn't have a lot of sugar, and sounds like it has good potential as a wellness tool.


A little background on my ever-evolving journey of health. I have an autoimmune condition that causes a lot of pain and inflammation in joints and soft tissues when I have flare-ups. I've been on prescription medication for it in the past, but I've spent years seeking out other solutions, so haven't been on those medications for awhile.


I have also developed a particular food chemical sensitivity, which limits certain fruits and vegetables from my diet (this may or may not be linked to the autoimmune issue, I haven't quite come to that conclusion yet). There are also certain foods I can't eat because they will cause autoimmune flare ups - such as legumes.


Celery is one of the "safe foods", so on top of being healthy in many ways, I knew it wasn't going to cause harm. Better yet, the benefits seemed to have the potential to further improve my autoimmune situation. So, I decided to check it out.

I bought a couple of bunches of celery, washed it thoroughly, chopped it all up, threw it in my Ninja blender, then used cheese cloth to strain out the juice. Not gonna lie, this process takes forever. Batching and freezing is the way to go here.


I decided each morning I would drink a glass of celery juice on an empty stomach and see what happened. I figured I would probably have to do this for a month before I noticed anything in particular, but I really didn't know what to expect one way or the other. After all, I hadn't researched it further than what I saw on the documentary.


It just so happened that when I started this process, I'd been dealing with a particularly stubborn autoimmune flare up for about six weeks, with nightly pain that would get so bad I had to break down and take ibuprofen just to make it tolerable. Most flareups only last up to a week, so it was a frustrating situation.

Quite unexpectedly, though, by the third day of drinking celery juice, I found my pain would completely disappear for several hours after drinking it. A few more days, and the pain was completely gone. I was pain free 24 hours a day with just a glass of celery juice in the morning each day.


I was surprised and excited about this result, so I spent a bit of time researching celery juice benefits to see if I could find an answer. What I did find is that celery, in addition to a litany of vitamins, contains phytochemicals, which are anti-inflammatory. I hadn't known this prior to drinking it, but it was evident that these phytochemicals are a powerful natural anti-inflammatory that effectively halted my inflammation and pain, and even the flare up altogether. Something that not one single medication I have ever been given has been able to do. Added bonus - no side effects and no unnatural chemicals.


After this, I went out of town for a few days, and didn't drink any celery juice for about a week. During this time, I continued to be pain free.


It's been a few months now, and I don't drink celery juice every day, so I find that if I go too long without it, my joint pain will start reigniting. I get back on the celery juice bandwagon, and it quickly resolves. So far, it's by far the best and most natural treatment I've found, and until something more permanent comes into my awareness, celery juice will continue to be my treatment of choice.


I have taken no medications whatsoever - not prescription or over-the-counter - since I started on the celery juice, because I simply don't need them, and they don't work as well. I'm not in the habit of taking medications I don't absolutely need, so I will continue washing, cutting, blending, and straining celery into that green liquid gold that keeps me feeling amazing day after day.
